Repeal of Individual Mandate will cause Health Premiums to Rise for People Age 50-64
Richard Fiesta, Executive Director of the Alliance for Retired Americans, made the following statement on the Senate Finance Committee tax bill released last night, which included the repeal of the Affordable Care Act’s individual mandate.
“Last night the Republican members of the Senate Finance Committee executed a sneak attack on older Americans.
“Repealing the mandate in the tax bill will have a devastating effect on Americans between the ages of 50 and 64. Allowing some to opt out of insurance coverage will leave 13 million without coverage, and the cost of health insurance premiums will skyrocket for those who stay in the market. This is especially true for 50-64 year-olds, who often need health coverage the most.
“This action took a very bad bill and somehow managed to make it much worse for older people. Our retiree activists were already on high alert, protesting outside district offices and lighting up the phones to their Representatives and Senators. This will only deepen their resolve to defeat this tax bill that helps millionaires and corporations and hurts working Americans.”
