An IAM family member is among the winners of the 2011 Union Plus Scholarship awards program. Receiving a $750 scholarship is Antonio Lloyd, III of Clayton, NJ, whose father Antonio Lloyd, Jr. is a member of Local Lodge 447 in Brooklyn, NY.
“Congratulations to Antonio Lloyd, III, this year’s IAM/Union Plus Scholarship winner,” said International President Tom Buffenbarger. “In today’s anti-middle-class climate, financial aid for America’s families has never been more needed.”
Since its inception in 1992, Union Plus has awarded $3 million in educational funding to more than 2,100 union members, spouses and dependent children. Recipients are selected based on academic ability, social awareness, financial need and appreciation of labor.
“I combined my analytical skills with my love of humanity to guide me in selecting my career choice of becoming an engineer,” says Antonio Lloyd, III. “A person’s character speaks louder than their voice,” added Antonio, who has shown his outstanding abilities by triumphing over medical challenges, participating in his high school’s Junior ROTC program, volunteering as a mentor and helping impoverished families through his church.
Union Plus Scholarships are granted to students attending a two-year college, four-year college, graduate school or a recognized technical or trade school.
