Building and Wood Worker’s International World Board Meeting

Organizing Director Don Barker and Woodworkers Chief of Staff Mike Rose spend time with Panamanian union Brothers while attending BWI’s World Board Meetings.

The Building and Wood Workers’ International (BWI), representing 350 Trade Unions in 130 countries, conducted their World Board Meeting in Geneva, Switzerland on November 28-30, 2016.  In attendance from the IAM were BWI Board Member and Woodworkers Chief of Staff Mike Rose, along with Organizing Director Don Barker.

Topics for discussion were the planning and strategizing for organizing multinational companies and, the outlook on the worldwide economic and political situations. The surprise Trump election will have an impact on achieving BWI’s objectives for improving living and working conditions for all U.S. allied companies’ members.

It remains a priority for BWI and IAM Wood, Pulp and Paper Workers to implement the International Labor Organization’s (ILO) defined core labor
standards as they relate to social standards, freedom of association and the right to collectively bargain in all of our framework agreements.  There are plans for continued dialogue with U.S. companies to campaign and promote fundamental trade union
rights and not to compromise these ILO core standards.
