Owen Herrnstadt

IAM International President Tom Buffenbarger today announced IAM Trade and Globalization Department Director Owen Herrnstadt as the new Chief of Staff to the International President, effective September 1, 2013.

Herrnstadt began his union career in 1987 as Associate General Counsel in the IAM Legal Department. He has also served as Counsel for Legislative Affairs until his appointment as Director of Trade and Globalization. In that capacity, Herrnstadt worked to develop and support IAM policies concerning international trade, investment, labor law and human rights. He is a member of the U.S. Export-Import Bank’s advisory committee and the U.S. State Department Advisory Committee on International Economics. He also serves as a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and as an Executive Committee member of IndustriALL, the global union federation which represents over 50 million workers worldwide.

Herrnstadt will maintain his highly-specialized Trade and Globalization responsibilities in addition to his new duties as Chief of Staff.

“Owen Herrnstadt has been an informed and outspoken advocate on behalf of workers’ rights,” said Buffenbarger. “He understands how trade agreements, technology and transportation are transforming the fundamental nature of work here in North America and around the world. I have long relied on his insights and expertise in these matters and I look forward to working with him in his new role as Chief of Staff.”
