Houston Airport Freight Handlers Vote for Change, Go IAM

Freight Handlers at Houston International Airport celebrate after learning they had successfully voted to join the IAM.

Approximately 250 Freight Handlers for a United Airlines contractor in Houston are the newest members of the IAM.

Seeking improved working conditions, a better quality of life for their families and fairness on the job, approximately 250 SM Freight Cargo workers voted 81 percent in favor of IAM representation.

“I want to congratulate my coworkers for showing the courage and dignity of standing up and voting for change,” said SM Cargo Agent Terrel Nicks.

The organizing win comes on the heels of a contract the IAM reached with United in April that will net up to 30 percent raises for 30,000 workers at the carrier. The contract also includes significant pension increases and industry-best job security.

“After seeing how successful the Machinists Union was for its United workers, it was an easy decision for us to join the IAM,” added coworker Nate Henderson.

“I congratulate and welcome the Cargo Agents of SM Freight Cargo into our IAM family,” said Transportation General Vice President Sito Pantoja. “I’d also like to thank District 141 for a great job in helping these brave workers form a union.”

The Cargo Agents will now enter the next phase of their campaign and prepare for contract negotiations.

Houston-based SM Cargo Agents voted to join the IAM and will continue their campaign for a first contract.
