As multinational corporations expand their reach and move work across the globe, unions in Europe, Asia and most recently Australia have joined forces to fight for the rights of all workers. At the National Conference of the Australian Workers Union (AWU), delegates endorsed a new alliance with the IAM. “Together, through the good times and the bad, the IAM and the AWU have stood together fighting for the rights of workers in North America, Australia, and around the world,” said IAM International President Tom Buffenbarger in his address to the Conference.

Buffenbarger and AWU National Secretary Paul Howes signed the IAM-AWU Alliance Agreement, which promises even more innovative coordination in organizing and collective bargaining in the future. “We must use the collective strength of working people to take on the gigantic corporations who threaten our way of life and the stance we have taken on fair work conditions,” said Howe in The Australian.

The IAM/AWU agreement is the fifth such alliance the IAM has formed with unions in Germany, Sweden, the United Kingdom and Japan.
