IAM Safety and Health Director Jim Reid has been appointed to serve on a U.S. Department of Labor committee tasked with improving health and safety in the maritime industry.
The Maritime Advisory Committee for Occupational Safety and Health (MACOSH) advises the Labor Secretary on occupational safety and health issues for workers in the shipbuilding, shipbreaking, ship repair, commercial fishing, longshoring and marine-terminal industries.
“Working to enhance and secure the safety and health of workers is an important job,” said Reid. “I am grateful to do that for our members in the maritime industry.”
The IAM represents approximately 10,000 people in the maritime industries.
“There is nothing more central to our role as a union than making sure our members go home to their family safe each and every day,” said IAM International President Robert Martinez Jr. “I congratulate Brother Reid for being selected for this important role and I’m glad the IAM will have an even louder voice in keeping working people safe in these vital industries.”
Reid’s appointment to the committee will last for two years.
