Two IAM family members are among the winners of the 2010 Union Plus Scholarship awards program. From the more than 5,000 applications submitted this year, 121 students representing 42 unions were awarded a total of $150,000 in scholarships.
The IAM winners, both receiving $1,000 scholarships, are Lynda Meheula, whose husband, Lee, is a member of Local 751-A in Seattle, WA and Leesa Riviere, whose father, David, is a member of Local 2231 in Sunnyvale, CA.
“Financial aid for America’s families has never been more crucial than it is today,” said International President Tom Buffenbarger. “Congratulations to this year’s Union Plus Scholarship winners.”
Since its inception in 1992, the Union Plus Scholarship program has awarded $3 million to students of working families who want to begin or continue their secondary education.
The program is open to union members, spouses and dependent children. In addition to academic ability, applicants are evaluated on essays they submit describing their career goals and their relationship with the union movement.
