The IAM is mourning the loss of former Southern Territory General Vice President Roe Spencer, who passed away on January 8, 2015. He was 88 years old.

After being raised in a union household, Spencer joined the IAM during his first job at the City Service Oil Refinery. He became Secretary-Treasurer of IAM Local 1317 in Lake Charles, LA and held this position as the Local grew into District 161. Spencer became a Special Representative in 1966 and a Grand Lodge Representative in 1970. He was appointed General Vice President of the Southern Territory in 1973 and held this position until his retirement in 1991.

“Roe Spencer was well known in all areas of the labor movement as a tireless advocate for working families. His expertise and passion made this great union even more powerful,” said IAM International President Tom Buffenbarger. “He will be sorely missed by many and the IAM sends its deepest condolences to his family.”
