The IAM mourns the death of District 78 Directing Business Representative Paul Mitchell of Etobicoke, Ontario, Canada. He passed away at the age of 48.
Brother Mitchell became a member at Local 2113 in 1994 before becoming a Business Representative in 2001. He was respected by labor and corporate interests in the community and frequently spoke out on equal pay and women’s and gay rights.
“Paul was one of the only people I’ve ever known in the union who whenever he was talking to members or staff he would always say, ‘Thanks Brother’ or ‘Thanks Sister,’” said Canadian General Vice President Dave Ritchie. “He was a true journeyman and a true unionist. If you ever needed someone at a picket line he was always ready.”
Mitchell is survived by his partner, Sandy Matheson, his mother, Anne, and his daughter, Sara.
