IAM Puerto Rico Stays Strong as Contract Negotiations with Lufthansa Technik Continue

IAM members at Lufthansa Technik Puerto Rico recently held a meeting in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, to discuss the progress of their ongoing contract negotiations with the company.

Nearly 90 employees gathered at the meeting where they were briefed by the negotiating committee regarding their collective bargaining agreement. The committee discussed both the tentative agreements already reached, as well as the pending items that could significantly impact the workers’ benefits and working conditions.

In May 2022, more than 200 mechanics and other workers at Lufthansa Technik Puerto Rico, LLC voted in favor of joining the IAM. Contract negotiations began at the end of 2022, following the urging of the worker’s negotiating committee.

“Our negotiating committee is determined to win a fair contract for our hard working members at Lufthansa Technik,” said IAM Southern Territory General Vice President Craig Martin. “We greatly appreciate the hard work of these valuable members, whose contributions are integral to the company’s success, and their IAM contract will ensure they receive their well-deserved benefits.”

Earlier this year, the IAM requested a federal mediator from the National Mediation Board (NMB) to assist with negotiations with Lufthansa Technik Puerto Rico as the company had not given priority to these negotiations.

“Despite all the setbacks, we are prepared to bargain and to win a fair and equitable contract for Lufthansa Technik workers,” said IAM Air Transport Territory Airline Coordinator Tom Regan. “The IAM will continue to push the company for a positive outcome to improve the lives of workers and their families.”

Lufthansa Technik mechanics and related workers provide service for United Airlines, Spirit Airlines, and Frontier Airlines.

“We are eager to reach the end goal and give workers the peace of mind that comes with a union contract,” said Juan Negron, IAM Special Assistant to the International President. “As we continue to display solidarity, we will continue to stay strong every time we go to the bargaining table and obtain a good package for our members.”
