Long-time IAM and political activist John Jefferies was recognized by family, friends and peers in the labor community for his 50 years of activism on behalf of working families and the labor movement.

“John doesn’t know the meaning of retire,” said General Secretary-Treasurer Warren Mart, who praised Jefferies’ service and leadership at the event. “At 82, he still keeps a vigorous schedule serving his IAM brothers and sisters.”

Jefferies, who joined the IAM in 1963, currently serves as President of the MD/DC Council of Machinists, Vice President of District Lodge 4 and Communicator for Local Lodge 1784. He also volunteers his time in the IAM’s Eastern Territory training new lodge officers.

Serving as a lodge officer himself in past years, Jefferies was also a Business Representative and Directing Business Representative of former District 12 for more than 16 years. He has also served as a Member of Maryland’s Senate and House of Delegates, as well as serving on many committees and councils.
