The members of the Spanish Leadership Working Group (SLWG) met this past week at the William W. Winpisinger Center in Hollywood, MD to wrap up a successful year and begin planning for a full 2016. They tackled a busy agenda that focused on the planning and development of Spanish Collective Bargaining – the newest program that will be offered in Spanish, February 21-26, 2016.

The group reflected on the successes of the past year: 111 members attended programs at the Winpisinger Center in Spanish in 2015, and the working group expanded its ranks by eight new members.

“This year marks a significant turning point in our Spanish Leadership programs,” said Chris Wagoner, Director of the William W. Winpisinger Center. “Our veteran group of instructors has opened the door for a new generation of Spanish speaking leaders to serve the membership of the IAM. I am pleased that we are able to offer new Spanish programs that will continue to further the skills of our Spanish speaking members.”

Another exciting goal of 2016 will be the pilot of the first Spanish Train-the-Trainer program in June.

Enrollment for next year’s Spanish Leadership programs has already begun, so Locals and Districts are encouraged to send their enrollments right away. Like the English Leadership programs, the Spanish Leadership programs build a solid understanding of trade unionism and provide participants with the skills and tools they need to effectively represent and grow the membership. They are designed for IAM officers, activists and members who speak Spanish as their primary language. While all classroom instruction, books and materials are in Spanish, the content is identical to the material used in the English leadership programs.
