IAM Supports a Voice for South Carolina Boeing Workers

The IAM is showing its support for the workers at Boeing in North Charleston, SC in a number of ways, including a labor solidarity rally outside the company’s main gate.

For several years, the Machinists Union has been working to bring a voice to the workers at Boeing’s 787-production plant in North Charleston, SC.

The company’s employees are challenging South Carolina’s notorious anti-labor political traditions. IAM Organizing Department Director Don Barker explains how the union is showing its support for the workers in a recent Machinists News Network video.

“We’ve had meetings with the teams inside drawing support. We have information going inside the facility. We have our website up,” said Barker. “The workers at Boeing need to stand up to be heard and to be counted.”

The IAM hosted a labor solidarity rally outside of the company’s main gate where dozens of Machinists members, community groups and members from other unions showed support as employees drove by. By letting Boeing workers know they’re not alone, the IAM can continue to build strong bonds on the shop floor.

“It’s time for all workers to start gaining the wages and benefits for the work that they do,” said Barker. “We are able to sit down and negotiate benefits and wages for the skills they possess and they deserve to be earning a good living.”
