Florida IAM Members Focus on Machinists Issues at State Council

Over 50 delegates across Florida gathered for the Florida State Council of Machinists Conference. 

  • Among the event’s highlights was the opportunity for delegates to engage with the youngest member of Generation Z ever elected to Congress, Rep. Maxwell Alejandro Frost(D-FL), representing Central Florida District 10.
  • Darron Soto (D-FL) from Central Florida District 9 also delivered a video message to the delegates. 
  • Florida State Senate (District 17) candidate Carlos Guillermo Smith, a former State Representative, addressed the council.

The conference featured speeches by three State Senator Candidates and numerous guest speakers. In addition to these informative sessions, National Political and Legislative Director Hasan Solomon stressed the significance of contributions to the Machinists’ Non-Partisan Political League (MNPL) from its members.

A crucial component of the event was the Florida AFL-CIO Legislative Department presentation titled “Elections have Consequences.” This presentation offered a comprehensive overview of the 2022 elections in Florida, revealing that union members and their families failed to turn out to vote. 

What they’re saying: “Our gathering in Orlando served as a vital platform for us to discuss and address the pressing need to educate our members and their families about Machinists’ issues, promote voter registration, and inspire active engagement in the electoral process,” said IAM Florida State Council of Machinists President Mike Phillips

“The Florida State Council serves as a vital platform for us to discuss and address the pressing need to educate our members and their families about issues from Washington to Tallahassee,” said IAM Southern Territory General Vice President Rickey Wallace. “The Issues discussed here will help engage our Florida members and inspire active engagement in the electoral process and with our MNPL program.” 

By the numbers: The Florida State Council successfully raised $1,930 for MNPL during the conference. 

  • Additionally, on Saturday night, the council organized a CASINO NIGHT fundraiser for Guide Dog of America, allowing delegates to enjoy a fun-filled evening while raising funds.
  • Through a raffle and the casino-themed event, the Florida State Council raised an impressive $9,835.

What’s next: The next conference for the Florida State Council will occur during the Florida Legislative Session in Tallahassee, Florida, from February 4-8, 2024.
