For future guide dog Paisley, becoming a working guide dog meant more than having the right potential. It took dedication, training, patience, and a team of people committed to helping her succeed.
Guide Dogs of America | Tender Loving Canines (GDA | TLC) is the IAM’s favorite charity because its mission embodies what our union is all about – changing lives through solidarity, compassion, and a commitment to helping others.
A Strong Start
At just eight weeks old, Paisley joined her volunteer Puppy Raisers, who introduced her to new experiences, taught her important house manners and socialization skills, and helped build the confidence she would need for the journey ahead.
“Paisley was the fourth puppy our family raised for Guide Dogs of America | Tender Loving Canines (GDA | TLC), and she had more energy than the first three combined!” said Jenny Thomas. “That just meant we got even more love, and a whole lot more bounce!”
“Paisley was very sweet and smart, with a little sass thrown in,” Jenny added. “She did everything we asked of her, and always looked good doing it. We are so proud of her!”
Learning to Lead
After a year with her Puppy Raisers, Paisley returned to Guide Dogs of America | Tender Loving Canines to begin formal training.
Sydney, a skilled guide dog mobility instructor, helped Paisley develop the skills she would need to safely and confidently guide her future partner.
“Paisley was such a joy to train!” said Sydney. “Her spunky personality, endless enthusiasm, and eagerness to please brought so much energy to every training session.”
After nine months of formal training on the GDA | TLC campus, Paisley had mastered the skills needed to become a guide dog.
Now came the most important part of her journey: meeting the person she would partner with.
A New Partnership
That person was Rob.
Rob has always believed life is meant to be lived outdoors. Whether casting a fishing line, camping under the stars, traveling with his fiancée, or spending time with his five grown children and grandchildren, he embraced every opportunity for adventure.
But about five years ago, the way Rob experienced the world began to change.
Rob was diagnosed with pigment dispersion syndrome, and as his vision declined, many of the activities and adventures he loved became increasingly difficult to navigate independently.
Then, a new kind of freedom arrived on four paws.
Enter Paisley.
The expertly trained Labrador retriever quickly became more than a guide. She became Rob’s partner in navigating the world and getting back to the activities he loves.
“Paisley was fun, energetic, and full of personality, but the moment her harness went on, she knew it was time to work,” said Rob. “I immediately saw how special she was and couldn’t wait for us to get started.”

Rob and Paisley’s partnership is the result of a journey that began when Paisley was just eight weeks old.
From her Puppy Raisers, to her trainer, to the dedicated team at GDA | TLC, countless people played a role in preparing Paisley for the moment she would meet Rob.
