IAM District 70, United Way of the Plains Host Fourth Annual Flags of Freedom Event in Wichita

The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) District Lodge 70, in partnership with United Way of the Plains, will host the fourth annual Flags of Freedom event, dedicated to honoring the service and sacrifice of veterans. This event allows the community to express gratitude to those who have sacrificed their lives for our nation.

Leading up to the event, volunteers from IAM Locals 639, 774, 839, 1989, and 2799, alongside other union affiliates and community members, gathered to plant 600 American flags across District 70’s property at the intersection of I-235 and South Meridian Avenue. These flags serve as a symbol of remembrance and are open for public viewing until Memorial Day.

The Flags of Freedom event is a tribute and a fundraiser for United Way programs dedicated to assisting veterans. Funds raised support essential services such as transportation, shelter, mental health care, and other wrap-around services. For instance, a $30 donation provides a military veteran with 17 free rides per year on Wichita transit through the Veterans Ride Free program.

In addition to the flag display, this year’s event features a new event organized by IAM District Lodge 70 members. The Unity and Community Pop-Up will occur from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 25, at IAM District 70. Attendees can enjoy food and beverages while learning about services tailored to veterans.

The IAM Veterans Services Program will also have representatives to help IAM Veterans correctly apply for VA benefits and compensation. The program also offers aid and resources in education, employment, home loans, life insurance, pension, health care, and burial benefits.

IAM District 70 and United Way of the Plains invite the community to participate in the Flags of Freedom event and honor the bravery and dedication of our nation’s veterans.

The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) is among the largest unions in North America and represents nearly 600,000 active and retired members in manufacturing, aerospace, defense, airlines, transportation, shipbuilding, woodworking, health care, and other industries. IAM District 70 represents workers in various industries across Kansas.
