Machinists Union Members at General Dynamics Electric Boat and Bath Iron Works Issue Joint Statement on Labor Negotiations

BATH, Maine, Aug. 10, 2023 – International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) Local 1871 members at Electric Boat in Groton, Conn. and IAM Local S6 members at Bath Iron Works in Bath, Maine, both subsidiaries of General Dynamics, released a joint statement on the current negotiations between IAM Local S6 and Bath Iron Works:

“We believe that a rising tide lifts all boats. When workers at Bath Iron Works are successful, it benefits General Dynamics Electric Boat workers and workers across the defense industry. We stand together in full solidarity.

“We are calling on Bath Iron Works to provide an industry-leading offer to its workers. Shipbuilding is no longer competitive with many similar industries. Workers need to be incentivized to seek employment and careers in shipbuilding, which can only be achieved with better wages and benefits packages.”

“We also call on the federal government to support the shipbuilding industry. The United States needs a strong shipbuilding industry to protect national security and create good-paying jobs.

“We believe that when workers are strong, our communities are strong. We are committed to fighting for a fair contract and a strong shipbuilding industry. Together, we can lift all boats.”

The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) is among the largest industrial trade unions in North America and represents nearly 600,000 active and retired members in the manufacturing, aerospace, defense, airlines, transportation, shipbuilding, woodworking, health care, and other industries.
