International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) affiliates around the world are organizing activities for the United Nation’s (UN) “Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.” The day, designed to raise public awareness about the many heinous acts committed against women and girls across the globe, is Thursday, November 25, 2010.
UN research shows that one in three women suffer from violence during their lives. ITF affiliates will be shedding light on the issue as it relates to the workplace. The Federation reports that women transport workers are experiencing more violence in the workplace and at home as the global recession continues.
Women in many different economic sectors experience violence in manufacturing sweatshops, agriculture, the hospitality industry and in domestic work. And, sexual harassment remains a serious problem across the spectrum of employment and in every part of the world.
