Approximately 1,900 members of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) Local 778 on Sunday voted to turn down a tentative agreement with Honeywell Federal Manufacturing & Technologies (FM&T) in Kansas City, Mo.
“The membership has spoken,” said IAM District 778 Business Representative Landon Miner, the union’s lead negotiator.
The union and the company began negotiations on Monday, Nov. 27, more than three months before the contract’s expiration date, March 23, 2024.
“We went to the table early in case of this very situation,” said IAM Local 778 Directing Business Representative Scott Brown. “This downvote won’t result in a strike at this time. We’ll communicate with the employer to figure out next steps moving forward.”
The bargaining unit went on strike in 2011, but in 2017 overwhelmingly ratified their current contract.
“This bargaining unit knows very well what they deserve and they voiced their vote to now stand up for it,” said IAM Midwest Territory General Vice President Steve Galloway. “The bargaining committee is dedicated to doing the membership justice by bringing back a contract that achieves significant improvements.”
