Kansas State Council of Machinists Strength on Display in Topeka

IAM members convened in Topeka this week for the Kansas State Council of Machinists meeting. The gathering brought together IAM members from across the state, creating a platform for political and legislative discussions and engagement around future electoral issues.

The Kansas State Council of Machinists is a testament to the strength and unity of the Machinists’ community throughout Kansas. As the Air Capital of the World, Kansas has a rich history of aerospace manufacturing and plays a crucial role in the state’s economic growth. The discussions held during this meeting reflected the dedication of IAM members to safeguard their jobs, industry, and the interests of working families.

One of the event’s highlights was the series of speeches by guest speakers, providing IAM members with valuable insights into the political landscape and the challenges different industries face.

IAM Political and Legislative Director Hasan Solomon emphasized the vital role played by members in contributing to the Machinists’ Non-Partisan Political League (MNPL). Solomon stressed that these contributions are instrumental in supporting legislative and political initiatives that directly impact the lives and livelihoods of IAM members.

A key focus of the discussions was the legislative and political efforts that helped pass the payroll support fund during the pandemic. The fund was a lifeline for aviation manufacturing jobs, an integral sector for our Kansas members. The provision established a federal cost-share program that helped retain IAM aerospace workers at risk of being furloughed.

“The strength of the IAM lies in our unity and collective commitment to the well-being of our members,” said IAM Southern Territory General Vice President Craig Martin. The discussions and advocacy at the Kansas State Council underscore our dedication to preserving the jobs and livelihoods of IAM members. I applaud Kansas State Council of Machinists President Brian Alexander for creating a space that helps shape policies that resonate with the core values of IAM members in Kansas.”

The passion and commitment exhibited by IAM members during the Kansas State Council meeting underscored the collective determination to address the state’s political and legislative challenges.
