International President Tom Buffenbarger has tapped Communications Representative Frank Larkin to take the helm at the IAM Communications Department upon the retirement of current Communications Director Rick Sloan. The appointment is effective January 1, 2013.

A 37-year IAM member who initiated as a United Airlines Ramp Serviceman in 1975, Larkin served in numerous capacities at Local 1726 in Boston, MA, Local 1322 in New York, NY and Local 1351 in Seattle, WA before joining the staff of the IAM Communications Department in 2000.

“Larkin brings decades of front-line experience to his newest position with the IAM,” said Buffenbarger. “As an organizer and communicator, he’s been a steady hand and a key figure in numerous campaigns to make justice on the job a reality for his fellow IAM members.”

As director of one of the IAM’s largest departments, Larkin will support organizing and negotiating efforts of locals and districts in addition to serving as a contact for local and national media on IAM-related issues. The IAM Communications Department also conducts specialized communications training at the Winpisinger Center, produces the digital IAM Journal, manages the IAM website, goiam.org, produces on-demand videos for the Machinists News Network and publishes the bi-weekly newsletter iMail.
