The IAM and progressive groups such as Bend the Arc, a Jewish American civil rights organization, are urging congress to restore key legislative powers of the Voting Rights Act, or VRA. The Supreme Court weakened the VRA in 2013 by stripping some protection language from the law, such as requiring 15 states with a history of voter discrimination, to comply with federal approval before changing their local election laws.
