Richard Schweiss, member of Local 933 in Tucson, AZ, has returned to his job as an A&P Mechanic at Defense Support Services (DS2) at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base after being unjustly terminated by the employer.

“I felt helpless at the time and unaware of how or why this was happening,” said Schweiss. “The company said I was lying or falsifying government records.” Shocked from the accusation, Schweiss knew what to do next: “First thing for me to do was to contact my Union.”

Local 933 Business Representative Stephen Taylor and Chief Steward Darren Roberts represented Schweiss through the grievance procedure, but the company wouldn’t budge. In arbitration, Taylor presented the facts of the case. The arbitrator ruled in favor of the IAM, saying Schweiss was unjustly terminated and ordered that Schweiss be reinstated to his job.

“Rich is a hardworking individual,” said Taylor. “He’s also a steward at the site and has been critical in growing our local lodge in Tucson. We’re very happy that justice prevailed.”

“All wins are good wins,” said Western Territory General Vice President Gary Allen, “but because this one involved Brother Schweiss’ honor and reputation, it is especially gratifying. Credit goes to Steve Taylor and Darren Roberts for a job well done.”
