Ohio IAM Member Elected Mayor for Seventh Term

IAM Grand Lodge Representative Jim Smith is sworn in for a seventh term as Mayor of South Lebanon, OH.

IAM Eastern Territory Grand Lodge Representative Jim Smith was recently elected to an amazing seventh term as Mayor of South Lebanon, OH. The 40-year IAM member has a long history of public service, beginning in 1977 as a police officer, before being elected to his first term as mayor in 1982.

“When it comes to campaigning, I do what Machinists do, work hard and go door-to-door and talk with the people I plan on representing,” said Smith.

Smith was narrowly defeated only once, in the 2011 mid-term election, however, in the true spirit of a trade unionist, Smith didn’t quit, running for a vacant seat as South Lebanon’s City Councilman, where he served until defeating the mayoral incumbent by a landslide.

“When you lose an election, you have to lose with dignity,” said Smith. “You can’t take it personally, just put your head down and get back working for the people, because that’s what it’s all about.”
