Ohio Union Members Rally for Sen. Sherrod Brown

Sen. Sherrod Brown (OH-D)
Ohio Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown was warmly welcomed at a rally hosted by Local 1943 in Middletown, OH, where IAM members at AK Steel are among the beneficiaries of the auto rescue supported by Brown.

IAM International President Tom Buffenbarger spoke this week at a rally for union members in southwest Ohio and delivered a strong argument for reelecting Ohio Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown.

Buffenbarger cited the local benefits of the auto rescue, which is credited with saving thousands of Ohio jobs and was opposed by Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney and Ohio GOP Senate candidate Josh Mandel, who described Brown’s support of the rescue as “un-American.”

“Senator Brown made the right choice for Ohio and for the country when he backed the auto rescue,” said Buffenbarger. “Now it’s time for Ohio to return the favor.”

The rally drew hundreds of Brown supporters to the rally outside IAM Local 1943 in Middletown, OH, which represents workers at nearby AK Steel, a key supplier to a restructured and resurgent General Motors.

“The mill is running on all cylinders now, with no one laid off and more than 1,600 workers pumping dollars into the local economy every week,” said Neil Douglas, president of IAM Local 1943.

“That’s the story of the auto rescue,” said Brown. “Putting people back to work.”
