Dear Sisters, Brothers, and Friends of the IAM,
Our union’s 134-year history is deeply connected to the tradition and celebration of Labor Day. It was a Machinist who founded Labor Day all the way back in 1882.
Since then, we’ve gotten stronger, larger and bolder with every passing year. Our members make the world move through the air and on the ground. The military equipment produced by IAM members helps our brave service men and women complete their missions around the world. It is IAM members who put a man on the Moon and continue to help us explore and better understand the universe.
We have so much to be proud of—and so much to look forward to.
The IAM is expanding its reach and continues making history by organizing Apple workers, museum workers, library workers, veterinary technicians, architectural professionals and so much more. Our union is meeting a critical moment for working people and bringing justice on the job to workers across North America—in traditional IAM industries and beyond.
We are continuing our long legacy of championing human, civil, and women’s rights for a more equitable future for everyone. The IAM’s Leadership Excellence Assembly of Dedicated Sisters, or IAM LEADS Program, is ushering in a new era to empower women to take their rightful place as leaders in our union. We are standing up for the rights of women, the LGBTQ+ community, and more because every worker deserves dignity—on and off the job.
On this Labor Day weekend, as we thank our members and all working people, we recommit ourselves to keep fighting for the values and ideals we hold so dearly. Together, we are going to build communities that put working people first and place justice and equality at the forefront.
