President Scardelletti Testifies Before T&I Subcommittee

On Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2005, the House of Representatives’ Transportation & Infrastructure Subcommittee on Railroads held a hearing on the subject of reform/privatization of Amtrak. The Subcommittee Chairman, Rep. Steve LaTourette (R-OH) invited TCU President Robert Scardelletti to testify at the hearing on behalf of Amtrak workers.

President Scardelletti advised the Subcommittee that Americans wanted and deserved a truly national rail passenger service. President Scardelletti pointed out to the Subcommittee how the freight railroads had been unable to make a profit in passenger service and how Great Britain had privatized its passenger service only to see it deteriorate. He further testified that for Amtrak to be broken up and given to any privately owned company would also fail.

He advised the Subcommittee that by working with Amtrak the desired reforms would be accomplished. To do this, President Scardelletti said could be accomplished by passage of legislation that would provide Amtrak with the resources it needs to evolve into an efficient, modern national intercity passenger service.
