The William W. Winpisinger Center Education and Technology Center recently hosted members from all sectors of the union to participate in the first Spanish Leadership I program of 2016. Twenty-four Machinists members learned various subjects including Labor History, Human Rights, Lodge Administration, Government & Politics, and the Role of the Stewards in the week-long program.
“I wasn’t sure what to expect at first but when I started hearing the passion coming from the instructors and the dialog from my fellow students, I was completely immersed in every class from start to finish. I plan on becoming more involved in my lodge and community,” said Marcos Navarro, a Steward at Local 1125/District 725, from San Diego.
Spanish Leadership programs build a solid understanding of trade unionism and provide participants with the skills and tools they need to effectively represent and grow the membership.
Eva Minguez, a Flight Attendant at Express Jet and Trustee at Local 2339N/District 142 in New Jersey said of the program, “It was refreshing to see my union take such an interest in ensuring that we, the membership, are educated with such depth in so many subjects. The fact that the IAM offers the classes in Spanish is a testament to how far we’ve come in expanding the growth and diversity of our great union.”
Members interested in attending the Spanish Leadership II April 10 should contact their Local Lodge President, Business Representative or General Chair immediately, as the deadline is soon approaching. Openings remain for all of the Leadership programs, as well as for the two Staff programs, but don’t miss the first enrollment deadline! Please note final assignments for all Staff programs will be made by each General Vice President.
