Spanish Leadership I Program Inspires Solidarity

Spanish Leadership instructors GLR Jorge Saenz and LL 901 President Maria Pozo teach labor history.

Two weeks ago Latino IAM members from across the country traveled to the William W. Winpisinger Center to attend the Spanish Leadership I program.

Discussions about organizing took center stage throughout the week of instruction, facilitated by Spanish-speaking IAM representatives who taught the classes. Though the program covers the same topics included in the regular Leadership I, all classroom instruction and materials are provided in Spanish.

“The Spanish Leadership I Program opens the door of opportunity for member involvement and engagement in their union – and lays the foundation for future growth by providing participants with an understanding of the challenges associated with a rapidly changing world of work. The IAM is strengthened by the addition of every newly trained activist, officer – and organizer,” said Winpisinger Center Director Chris Wagoner.

The Winpisinger Center currently offers Leadership I and II in Spanish, and later this fall will be piloting the Advanced Leadership in Spanish. Any member who has taken Leadership classes, in either Spanish or English, is eligible to take the Spanish Leadership programs.

Spaces are still available for the Spanish Leadership II class scheduled for June 20 – 26, 2010 and the Advanced Spanish Leadership Pilot scheduled for September 26 – October 1, 2010.

Enrollments in any of the Spanish Leadership Programs do not count against a Lodge’s regular leadership program allotment. Click here for the enrollment forms, or contact Pam Kinney at 301-373-8820.
