Spanish Leadership Programs Set for Growth in 2013

Participants in the last Spanish Leadership 1 course in 2012 capped off a successful year for the William W.  Winpisinger Center’s Spanish Leadership Program.

The Spanish Leadership Programs offered at the William W. Winpisinger Education and Technology Center are set for even more growth in 2013. The courses are designed for IAM officers, activists, and members who speak Spanish as their primary language. The last Spanish Leadership I class in December 2012 capped a successful year that was part of a larger IAM effort to make education available to all its members.

The first Spanish Leadership Program for 2013 is Advanced Leadership; scheduled for February 10 – 15. The deadline to enroll is February 1, 2013. If you have already completed Leadership I and II and you are interested in attending the February session, please let your Directing Business Representative, Business Representative, or Local Lodge President know this week. Enrollment forms are available here. Please be sure to follow the procedures set forth by your Local Lodge for attending programs at the Winpisinger Center.

The popular Spanish Leadership Program has expanded from a pilot Leadership 1 class in 2006 to include Leadership I, Leadership II, Advanced Leadership, and Train-the-Trainer programs. All classroom instruction, books, and materials are in Spanish and the content is identical to the material used in the English leadership programs.

More than 300 Spanish-speaking IAM members have participated in Leadership Programs at the Winpisinger Center. “I am extremely proud of the work our union is doing to make education available to all of our members. No other union has such an extensive education curriculum for its Spanish-speaking members. Our union is stronger, better, and more effective because these efforts,” noted International President Tom Buffenbarger. “I encourage every IAM officer, activist and representative to actively support the Spanish Leadership Programs by reaching out and mentoring a Spanish-speaking Sister or Brother and encouraging them to participate in education programs at the Winpisinger Center.”
