Spanish Leadership Working Group Revamps Spanish Classes for 2014

IAM Spanish Leadership Working Group members, front to back, IAM Transportation Education Representative Monica Silbas, Local 1125 Steward Edmundo Osorio, and IAM District 725 Organizer Calixto Tapia, work to revamp the 2014 Spanish Leadership Program class offerings.

A diverse mix of Spanish-speaking IAM members, known as the Spanish Leadership Working Group (SLWG), gathered at the William W. Winpisinger (WWW) Educational Center in Hollywood, MD to undertake an extensive overhaul of the Spanish Leadership classes offered at the Center.

The programs are an ideal way to cultivate the next generation of IAM leaders as the labor movement develops and the demographics of our country continue to change.

Hailing from various Latin American countries, the SLWG worked together to deliver a comprehensive course outline. The group, led by IAM Grand Lodge Representative Macario Camorlinga, consisted of retired Western Territory Grand Lodge Representative Joel Ochoa, IAM Western Territory Grand Lodge Representative Richard Suarez, IAM Transportation Education Representative Monica Silbas, IAM Southern Territory Special Representative Javier Almazan, IAM District 725 Organizer Calixto Tapia, IAM District 165 Organizer Geny Ulloa, and Local 1125 Steward Edmundo Osorio.

The group spent the week re-working class materials, schedules and supplemental documents to offer better in-depth classes to Spanish-speaking IAM members. The group also added a final course, Train-the-Trainer, to complete the entire selection of Leadership classes offered in Spanish at the Center.

“The Winpisinger Center is a tangible symbol of the IAM’s commitment to membership education,” said General Vice President Dora Cervantes. “Our organization understands and supports the diversity within the membership. WWW Leadership programs are taught in English, Spanish and French to ensure that all of our members have access to education.”

Five Spanish Leadership Programs are being offered in 2014 to address the needs of our Spanish-speaking Sisters and Brothers. For more information on attending a program, contact Ruth Lowery at rlowery@iamaw.org.
