Aviation High School Students Explore Careers Through IAM Air Transport Territory’s Winpisinger Center Program

An annual three-day program, held at the William W. Winpisinger Education and Technology Center, recently brought together 35 seniors from Aviation High School in Queens, N.Y.

The participants are handpicked, top-of-their-class graduating seniors selected for their academic achievement and commitment to aviation careers. The IAM continues its long-standing partnership with the school, providing students with exposure to aviation career pathways through training, site visits and scholarship opportunities.

Students participated in classroom instruction and heard from a range of IAM representatives about the benefits of union representation and the role of organized labor in the aviation industry. The program emphasized the importance of strong contracts, workplace protections and career stability for future aviation professionals.

“The IAM is committed to opening doors for the next generation,” said IAM Air Transport Territory General Vice President Richie Johnsen. “Programs like this give students a clear path to rewarding aviation careers built on skill, safety, and strong union representation.”

IAM General Secretary-Treasurer Dora Cervantes addressed the class, highlighting the importance of solidarity and opportunity in the aviation industry.

“These students represent the next generation of skilled aviation professionals, and it is critical they understand the power of collective strength and the value of a union voice early in their careers,” said Cervantes.

“Giving students direct exposure to the aviation industry and the role of unions helps them understand not just how to build a career,” said IAM Air Transport Territory Chief of Staff Edison Fraser. “But also how to protect and strengthen it.”

IAM District 142 Flight Safety Director Bud Brown led sessions on aircraft accident investigation, offering students an inside look at how the IAM supports safety efforts and works alongside the National Transportation Safety Board. The group observed operations inside the control room and data telemetry room. Students then wrapped up their week with a tour of IAM Headquarters

The participating seniors are set to graduate this June and will complete their final certification requirements to become licensed aircraft maintenance technicians.
