Congresswoman Fudge Blasts United’s Embattled CEO Smisek

Congresswoman Marcia Fudge (D-OH) sharply criticized United CEO Jeffrey Smisek for the airline’s decision to dramatically downsize its operation at Cleveland’s Hopkins Airport.

International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) members and staff launched legislative efforts after United Airlines announced its operational reduction in Cleveland and other plans to outsource ground operations work.

“I write to express my strong opposition to United Airlines’ recent decision to consider a reduction in service operations at Cleveland’s Hopkin’s International Airport,” stated Congresswoman Fudge (D-OH). “This decision will harm working families in Cleveland, increase costs for travelers and is contrary to testimony United Airlines provided Congress.”

During congressional hearings regarding the merger of United, Continental and Continental Micronesia CEOs Glenn Tilton and Jeffrey Smisek both assured Congress that the mega-merger would not have a negative effect on frontline employment levels.
