Virginia Woodworkers Get International Support

Approximately 800 trade union delegates at the recently concluded Builders and Woodworkers International Congress in Lille, France, voted to accept an emergency resolution submitted by the Machinists union calling on furniture giant IKEA to honor the rights of workers at an IKEA subsidiary in Danville, VA, seeking to join the IAM.

The resolution, also supported by GS, the Swedish woodworkers union, identified a list of difficulties facing the workers, including: firing workers who were injured on the job; surveillance of workers and union organizers; favoritism based on gender and race and denying workers access to information regarding their right to organize and form or join a union of their own choosing.

The resolution passed unanimously and will be presented to IKEA by the Swedish Union.
