WWW Center Holds Leadership Class in Puerto Rico

Instead of a Spring Break full of sun, sand and surf, IAM stewards and local leaders from Local 2725 in San Juan, Puerto Rico were hitting the books in a leadership training course provided in Puerto Rico by the Winpisinger Center.

Winpisinger Instructor Anne Wiberg led the all-Spanish training with assistance from Southern Territory GLR Carlos San Miguel, District 166 Organizer Javier Alamazan and Local 2725 member Pedro Romero. Thirty stewards and local leaders from several workplaces from across the island of Puerto Rico attended.

“It was a very intensive three-day session,” said Wiberg. “We covered a lot of territory, from the role of the steward, to grievance handling and proper local lodge administration. The training also included role-playing exercises on how to meet the management on grievances. All the participants were excited and involved, with lots of interaction and questions.”

The training was important to Local 2725, which has recently doubled in size thanks to a string of organizing wins coordinated by Business Representative Jose Rodriguez Baez.

“As we continue to grow in Puerto Rico, we are making sure our stewards, the backbone of the union, are trained and professional in servicing our members there,” said Southern Territory GVP Bob Martinez, who attended the training and addressed the class. “Our current members in Puerto Rico have strong IAM contracts and dedicated representatives, which will combine to attract more new members for the IAM in Puerto Rico.”
