IAM International President Tom Buffenbarger welcomed more than 30 Secretary-Treasurers from AFL-CIO-affiliated unions to the William W. Winpisinger Education and Technology Center recently for a meeting that included an analysis of pension and health care issues as well as presentations on the myriad of federal compliance requirements.

“The Winpisinger Center has hosted hundreds of conferences and classes over the years, but this is the first time we’ve welcomed the AFL-CIO Secretary-Treasurers for their annual meeting,” said IAM General Secretary-Treasurer Robert Roach, Jr. “I’m confident the center’s resources and atmosphere provided the same benefits for the AFL-CIO officers and their staff as it does for the IAM members and representatives who pass through the center every week.”

In addition to an agenda that included a review of record keeping and accounting issues that are unique to labor unions, the participants examined the challenges and opportunities presented by the latest digital technologies. In a nod to the fast-moving role of technology, the business of the day-long meeting was conducted almost exclusively on Kindle tablets, as it was by delegates at the recent IAM Grand Lodge Convention in Toronto.

Among those taking part in the conference were Secretary-Treasurers and staff from: Association of Flight Attendants-CWA; American Federation of Government Employees; American Federation of Musicians; American Federation of Teachers; American Postal Workers Union; International Union of Bricklayers & Allied Craftworkers; Brotherhood of Railroad Signalmen; Communication Workers of America; International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers; Ironworkers International Union; International Union of Painters and Allied Trades; Maritime Trades Department; Maritime Engineers’ Beneficial Association; National Association of Letter Carriers; Professional Aviation Safety Specialists; Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists; Sheet Metal Air, Rail and Transportation Workers; Seafarers International Union; Transportation Communications Union/International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers; Transportation Trades Department; Transport Workers Union of America and American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations.
