There is still time to send in enrollments for this autumn’s cluster of Spanish Leadership Programs at the William W. Winpisinger Center in Hollywood, MD. Locals and Districts are encouraged to identify Spanish-speaking members who would benefit from attending Leadership classes in their native language and have the potential to become workplace leaders.
“It was a great experience to be able to participate in the Spanish speaking classes,” said IAM Long Beach, CA Local 1930 member Valfred Carreon. “Learning about our union and finding ways to help our Spanish-speaking brothers and sisters is something that our union needs more than ever.”
Spanish-speaking workers currently make up 17% of the U.S. population, making them the largest racial or ethnic minority group. The Pew Research Center projects that the share of Spanish speaking workers in the U.S. will rise to 31% by 2050. Click here for the report.
“Like the English Leadership programs, the Spanish Leadership programs build a solid understanding of trade unionism and provide participants with the skills and tools they need to effectively help their sisters and brothers and build our union,” said IAM International President Tom Buffenbarger. “We are committed to providing all of our members with an education that is concrete and practical – so that justice on the job and service to the community is not simply a motto, but a reality for an increasing number of workers.”
