Strike Looms at Kennedy Space Center

June 13th, 2007 – Representatives of the International Association of Machinists & Aerospace Workers (IAM) Lodge 2061 and District 166 met today with representatives of the United Space Alliance and the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service (FMCS) in an attempt to resolve a contract dispute covering 580 workers at the Kennedy Space Center (KSC).

After lengthy discussions, the company proposal remained unchanged.

“The union is extremely disappointed with the unwillingness of the United Space Alliance to agree to a resolution that is fair for the workers,” said Local 2061 President Lew Jamieson. “The workers at KSC have said over and over they will not agree to a substandard contract.”

IAM members at the Space Center have already authorized a strike if an acceptable contract was not reached. Per the IAM Constitution, no further votes by the membership are required. The IAM negotiating committee will meet to determine when a strike at the Space Center will occur.
