U.S. Labor Board Announces Election Date for Tennessee Nissan Workers to Join Machinists Union

WASHINGTON, Feb. 15, 2023 – The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) has set an election date for Tool and Die Maintenance Technicians at Nissan North America in Tennessee. The Tool and Die craft unit will vote on Thursday, March 16 from 5 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. onsite at Nissan in Smyrna, Tenn.

The NLRB recently announced that the IAM’s petitioned-for group of tool and die maintenance technicians qualify as craft employees and should be considered a standalone craft unit.

“Nissan Tool and Die has an opportunity to create a better life for themselves, their families, and their community by voting yes in this election,” said IAM Southern Territory General Vice President Rickey Wallace. “The group has been waiting almost two years to exercise their freedom to belong to a union. I salute this group of skilled tool and die maintenance technicians for their courage in standing up to Nissan and demanding a voice in the workplace. We hope that over the next month, Nissan North America will respect the rights of their employees and let them make a decision free of intimidation and coercion.”

The IAM has proudly represented employees in the automotive sector since 1916. The IAM created the first Local Lodge devoted exclusively to automotive and truck employees in 1919. Today, the IAM represents about 47,000 Tool and Die Makers and 3,000 automotive manufacturing workers at Ford, Penske Truck, Hyundai, and Chevrolet.
