Best Design Districts

First Place—District Lodge 190
http://www.iamdistrict190.org
Clever, clean and packed full of information. Inviting presentation. The use of type on this page is strong with good sizing and good choice of type style. The site makes use of sub-headings and highlight key words. The design is clean, structured and helps busy readers scan easily for what they want.

Second Place—District Lodge 751
http://www.iam751.org/

Orderly, well organized, no frills, but extremely full of information. Busy without being distracted. Topical and timely.

Third Place—District Lodge 143
http://www.iam143.org/
Well displayed, simple and artistic. Easy and friendly to use. Simplicity is the key to making this site easy to navigate and easy on the eyes with good “people” pictures – no moving images to divert readers attention away from the content. Photos are used large and for the most part good quality. All links load very quickly as well as photos which is key to satisfying users.

Honorable Mention—District Lodge 141
http://www.iam141.org
Well organized and user-friendly.

Best Design Local Lodges

First Place—Local Lodge 1781
http://www.iamll1781.org/

Snappy, clean and uncluttered yet informative. Graphics and typography very complementary.

Second Place—Local Lodge 1751
http://www.iam1751.com/
Good use of color. Graphics are simple and neat. Neat intro.

Third Place—Local Lodge 1759
http://www.iam1759.org/

Less is more—Judicious use of copy doesn’t bog reader down..

Honorable Mention—Local Lodge 869
http://www.aimtasl869.org/

Unremarkable intro page leads to a spiffy, clean and neat home page. A little more attention to the intro page, or just eliminating it altogether and putting the English/French choice on the home page, would have made this entry more competitive.

Best Feature Districts

First Place—District Lodge 837
http://www.iam837.org/

Two bright and unique features—a contract countdown clock graphically reminding readers of the collective bargaining process; LabourStart news updated daily. Gives readers a reason to visit daily.

Second Place—District Lodge 143
http://www.iam143.org/
The “About 143” feature has a unique treatment for introducing readers to local officers. Each officer has a separate page with full page (almost life size!) friendly photo with phone information BUT it also includes the local leaders: philosophy, priorities, family, work past, union past. Great feature – fun and informative.

Third Place—District Lodge 190
http://www.iamdistrict190.org

“Shop Talk” is a feature, which uses a photo of a member and a quote about a current topic of interest –the issue I saw was about the US role in Iraq. One “Shop Talk” appears on every page in a colorful box on the side of a page’s main article. It is a good way to involve members and break up dense articles.

Best Feature Local Lodges

First Place—Local Lodge 712 http://www.aimtasectionlocale712.org

“Youth Committee” is a feature and also a mission to raise awareness, educate and get the young people involved in the union movement” It’s a great idea and advantageous for the local as well as an active feature for the web site.

Second Place—Local Lodge 587
http://www.local587.com

“Our History” is a feature that links the member to the local’s history told through photos and “year-by-year” links with multi media videos about the unions early years. A wonderful resource.

Third Place—Local Lodge 1660
http://www.aim1660.org/uniondues.htm

The Union Dues is a terrific feature of this website. The content lends credibility to joining the union explaining how joining a Union pays by showing how union salaries are 32% higher than non-union.

General Excellence Districts

FIRST PLACE:
District Lodge 143
http://www.iam143.org/
Strong, fast opening “home” page with great member photo. Use of color is good. A home button is always available for readers to click when using links. Great contact pages for union officers, which even include their philosophy. Good content with local union links to interest members. And, includes a physical address plus phone number.

SECOND PLACE: District Lodge 141
http://www.iam141.org.
Created and managed with user in mind. Simple, informative, no distracting frills and gadgets. News is timely and relevant. And it contains a physical address, phone number and solid contact information.

Second Place: Local Lodge 1781
