Heavy equipment operators and administrative staff working for Akima at Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM) in Washington state have voted to join the IAM Union, securing a voice on the job and a path toward negotiating their first union contract.
The campaign, led by IAM District W24 Business Representative and Organizer Aubria Hopes, brought together 10 workers who recognized the importance of standing together for fair treatment, stronger protections, and a seat at the table.
The organizing effort began when a majority of the heavy equipment operators quickly showed support for forming a union. Their leadership helped bring administrative employees into the conversation, where discussions about wages, job protections, and the benefits of a collective bargaining agreement resonated with the group.
Through several meetings and ongoing conversations, the workers continued building support and solidarity across the shop. Even when the employer contested the petition and delays created uncertainty, such as a temporary National Labor Relations Board closure, the group remained united and committed to moving forward together.
“From the very beginning, these workers understood the power of standing together,” said Hopes. “They asked thoughtful questions, supported one another throughout the process, and stayed focused on building a stronger future where they have a real voice at work.”
The workers have now elected their shop stewards and bargaining committee as they prepare to begin negotiating their first IAM contract.
“This organizing victory shows what is possible when working people come together and demand respect on the job,” said IAM Western Territory General Vice President Robert “Bobby” Martinez. “We are proud to welcome these workers into the IAM family and look forward to standing with them as they negotiate a contract that reflects their value and the important work they perform.”
“When workers unite, they gain the power to raise standards on the job,” said IAM District W24 President and Directing Business Representative Brandon Bryant. “Our union is proud to support these members as they move forward.”
