IAM Local 811 successfully hosted its first Young Workers Committee Event, bringing together the next generation of IAM Union members and leaders for an evening focused on education, solidarity, safety, and leadership development. Local 811 members mainly provide Fleet Services to United Airlines at Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport.
The event was centered around three important goals: Introduce. Educate. Empower.
“Events like this allow many younger employees, who may enter the workforce without fully understanding union rights, to understand the protections, opportunities, and collective strength that a union provides,” said IAM District 141 Airline Assistant General Chair Victor Hernandez, who is also a Local 811 member. “This committee event helped close that gap by creating direct conversations between members and leadership in an environment focused on mentorship, education, and unity.”
Topics discussed throughout the event included:
The Local 811 Executive Board was applauded for their help, support and commitment in making this event possible. Their continued investment in member education and young worker engagement plays an important role in strengthening the future of the Local.
“My gratitude goes to the 811 Young Workers Committee leadership and volunteers who helped organize the event and encourage participation across the membership,” said IAM District 141 President and Directing General Chair Mike Klemm. “Their work helped create an environment where members could ask questions, build connections, and become more involved in the future of the Local.”
“The opportunity for younger members to learn more about the union, understand their rights in the workplace, and build stronger relationships with fellow union brothers and sisters is the foundation of our future.” said IAM Air Transport Territory General Vice President Richie Johnsen. “The Local 811 Executive Committee is committed to bringing the ideas of the Committee on the Future to life, and this is a great step in that direction.”
