October is Breast Cancer and Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Every year over 178,000 women and 2,000 men are diagnosed with breast cancer.  Second only to skin cancer, breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths among women.  October is the month in which cancer prevention organizations and the health care community strive to bring awareness to breast cancer research, treatment and prevention.  Learn more about breast cancer, dealing with a diagnosis of breast cancer and help fund mammograms from low income women by visiting the following websites:  www.nbcam.org

Domestic Violence Doesn’t Discriminate

Domestic violence is an epidemic affecting all communities regardless of age, economic status, race, religion, nationality or educational background. An estimated one in four women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime with the increasing rates of occurrence among dating teens and college students. Men are victims of domestic violence as well, in that 5.5% of male homicides are the result of violence inflicted by a spouse or significant other.  The first Monday in October is designated as the Day of Unity and is intended to remind society of the need for stronger anti-violence laws, training, community programs, shelters and educational programs that will help break the cycle of violence.  To learn more about the warning signs of domestic violence, escaping a violent situation or awareness/prevention activities, visit these websites:
