Commission Urges Tougher Stance on China Trade

November 9, 2005 – In their annual report to Congress, The U.S. – China Economic and Security Review Commission is urging lawmakers to take a tougher stance on China’s unfair trade practices.
The report calls for an immediate, across-the-board tariff on imports from China unless China moves immediately to allow their currency, the yuan, to rise in value by at least 25 percent.
The Commission also recommends stronger enforcement of international laws governing intellectual property theft, as well as changes in the Bush administration’s task force that monitors foreign investment in the U.S.
China’s growing military status and the Chinese government’s efforts to control the flow of information via the Internet and other media are also concerns raised by the commission.
