November 21, 2005 – As President Bush prepared to make a stop in China this weekend, a U.S. official said China has agreed to buy 70 Boeing 737 airliners. China frequently announces large purchases of American airliners ahead of visits by U.S. leaders in an effort to draw attention away from the surging trade gap between the two countries.
The U.S. trade gap with China is on pace to top $200 billion this year, shattering last year’s record $162 billion deficit.
Meanwhile, Bush’s trip to Beijing produced no breakthroughs to put a stop to China’s unfair trade practices. Bush took a soft stance on the Communist country and as a result got nothing but empty promises from Chinese President Hu Jintao.
