More Families Sinking Into Poverty

February 26, 2007 – Millions of working Americans are falling closer to the poverty line as the gap between the rich and poor continues to widen.

A McClatchy Newspaper analysis of the 2005 census figures (the latest available) found that nearly 16 million Americans are living in deep or severe poverty.

An interesting finding from the study is severe poverty is more pronounced in the South, where 6.5 million poor residents are dealing with the loss of manufacturing jobs in the textile, apparel and furniture-making industries.
