IAM Southern Territory Now Includes Virgin Islands

In two recent elections, workers welcomed the Machinists Union to the United States Virgin Islands, an unincorporated territory of the United States.

Fifty-three Port Agents at the Port Authority in St. Thomas, St. Croix and St. John voted unanimously to join the IAM. In another election, 30 guards at the Virgin Island Hospital in St. Thomas and St. Croix also voted unanimously to join the IAM. Grand Lodge Representative Dave Porter was the organizer in charge of the campaign.

“For the first time in the 123-year history of the IAM, we are now in the Virgin Islands. This is historic,” said Southern Territory General Vice President Bob Martinez. “We have expanded in Puerto Rico and are now moving into the Virgin Islands. We are dedicated to growing our union geographically as well as numerically. GLR Dave Porter has done an outstanding job of organizing, and he deserves our congratulations. This is just the beginning of our organizing in the Virgin Islands.”
