IAM Files for Representation Election at Spirit Airlines

The IAM announced it filed an application with the National Mediation Board (NMB) to conduct a representation election for fleet service employees at Spirit Airlines.

“Today we took the first step toward gaining power and respect on the job,” said Spirit ramp agent Mauricio Oviedo-Falcon from Fort Lauderdale, FL. “The time is now for all ramp agents at Spirit to unite in solidarity and demand the same respect that unionized flight attendants and pilots at Spirit have.”

The NMB will investigate to determine if there is a “sufficient showing of interest” to conduct a representation election. Under current federal law, at least 50 percent of the employees in a specific class and craft must request that the NMB conduct a representation election.

“The ramp agents at Spirit Airlines today stood up for dignity in the workplace by requesting the right to vote for IAM representation,” said IAM District 141 President Rich Delaney. “The IAM stands with these courageous workers and will back them 110 percent in their fight to gain union representation.”
