Congressional Republicans are aiming to repeal a regulation issued by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) which mandates that employers keep records of serious work-related injuries and illnesses for 5 years. This would be a major setback for workers in dangerous industries where proper record-keeping helps identify health and safety-related trends, and thus enables both employers and unions to address them.
To be clear, OSHA used to mandate that employers keep records for up to 40 years. Unfortunately, a court limited that mandate to just 6 months. OSHA then came back with a new rule compromising at 5 years. Now Republicans are trying to do away with that rule entirely.
